*UNU-IAS Objectives*: The UNU-IAS, one of the premier research and training centres of United Nations University is located in Yokohama and was officially inaugurated in April 1996. The Institute’s work is directed to finding solutions to pressing global issues of concern to the United Nations. Its mission is to „advance knowledge and promote learning for policy-making to meet the challenges of sustainable development.“

UNU-IAS research is advanced in that it seeks to identify new strategic areas of research related to sustainable development, particularly for governments and decision makers in developing countries. Specifically it focuses on issues that are high on the United Nations agenda and shapes its research to be policy-oriented. Research consists of advanced and multidisciplinary methodologies accompanied by postgraduate education and capacity development activities, particularly for developing countries.

*Background*: The Junior Professional Fellow/Programme Associate will join the newly established International Satoyama Initiative at UNU-IAS and support tasks related to the implementation of this Initiative.

The International Satoyama Initiative undertakes targeted research and facilitation of a process to promote the sustainable use and management of natural resources with a focus on rural areas called /satoyama/ in Japan.

It promotes a society in harmony with nature and develops a model of sustainable natural resource management built on local and traditional knowledge and practices. It also seeks to address information needs in area management and planning, and further contributes to the development of an international framework that will
strive towards the sustainable use and management of biodiversity and ecosystem services. In this regard, the International Satoyama Initiative at UNU-IAS will play the role of a clearing house mechanism.

*Major responsibilities and required qualifications*: The successful applicant will be fully engaged in the implementation of programme activities and assist in related research at UNU-IAS. Applicants with an interest in environment and development issues especially in the issue of /satoyama/, ecosystem management, and biodiversity are encouraged to apply. The position entails some of the following responsibilities:

* Provide support and liaise with the stakeholders involved in the
International Satoyama Initiative.
* Organize conferences, meetings, and seminar activities related to
the Initiative.
* Provide assistance in developing programme activities, and
facilitation of access to information and expertise in support of
the Initiative.

Applicants with demonstrated high academic achievement, excellent
organizational and writing skills are encouraged to apply. Specifically,
the position will require the applicant to have the following
qualifications:

* Possess a Masters degree or equivalent in any field but must have
an interest in environment and sustainable development issues.
* Excellent (to native) English is required, and excellent Japanese
is an advantage.
* Good computer skills, in particular sound familiarity with the
full Microsoft Office suite is required
* The applicant should be comfortable to work on multiple tasks, to
strict timelines and be able to function effectively within a team.

*Remunaration*: This is a full-time position at UNU-IAS but not an
official UN position. Depending at which level the position is filled
(Junior Professional Fellow or Programme Associate) monthly remuneration
ranges from 240,000 — 300,000 JPN. Assistance to find adequate housing
is given by UNU-IAS.

*Duration of contract*: One year including a three-month probationary
period, with the possibility for renewal.
